Who are we?

Kitchen Social & Cookery Club at the Green Kitchen

Based a stones throw from the beach, we are a non-profit (CIC) organisation run entirely by it's founder Lucy Gray and a wonderful bunch of dedicated volunteers.

Within our Lifestyle Hub we  support our community through a variety of inclusive, free-to-access programs designed to encourage scratch cooking, tackling food poverty, promoting sustainability and fostering social connections.

We currently deliver Four key community projects, all of which are open to members:

1. THE SURPLUS FOOD HALL:

We are open Tuesday to Friday from 12 PM to 6 PM, offering quality groceries, including meat, cheese, and household cleaning products, all at affordable prices. Our members save on household expenses while helping to care for the planet by utilising surplus goods and reducing food waste.

2. THE FOOD ACADEMY:

We offer doorstep food deliveries and provide essential cooking lessons, food nutrition advice, and budgeting support, specifically for households with no income.

3. SUGAR AND SPICE KIDS CLUB:

Our exciting kids' club offers a variety of fun, creative, and educational activities, all designed to inspire a love for learning and the environment. Set near the sea, we focus on nature-based experiences that connect children to the world around them, fostering a deeper appreciation for the planet and its beauty.

4. KITCHEN THERAPY:

We tackle social isolation and loneliness through workshops and events focused on local issues, the environment and conservation projects in partnership with Canterbury Christchurch University. Join us for free tea, cake and great company. Or come and try one of our fun cooking classes, where you can learn new skills, meet new people and cook some amazing recipes.

These projects, along with many more initiatives, are here to serve our community and build social connections.
